JOB TITLE: CAREER COUNSLEOR

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Employment and Training

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $12.00-$14.00 per hour, Fulltime, 35 hrs/wk., Non-Exempt Status

Overall responsibility: Provide job search and job readiness instruction, deliver on-going, comprehensive career counseling to assist with employment, provide on the job counseling and job retention services.

Specific Duties:

  1. Deliver orientation on programs, requirement, and procedures
  2. Conduct, organize and analyze information about clients through records, tests, interviews and professional sources, to appraise their skill level, interest, aptitudes, abilities and personality characteristics
  3. Set up and teach classes, including but not limited to, keeping attendance logs, resumes, job applications, cover letters, mock interviews, employer expectations and life skills
  4. Conduct individual and group sessions on job search and job readiness techniques, professional and personal development activities, career planning, labor market and vocational information and job retention techniques
  5. Assist individuals in developing appropriate employment goals and provide job retention to maintain employment
  6. Observe and document attitudes and behaviors and actively listen and problem solve both prior to and after employment
  7. Assist clients in developing a job search and job retention plan, estimating the length of time it will take for the client to obtain suitable employment and maintain employment
  8. Assist clients in overcoming barriers to employment such as daycare, transportation, prior incarceration, etc.
  9. Provide counseling, assistance and necessary follow-up to classroom and retention participants
  10. Set up job bulletin board to allow individuals to investigate job opportunities
  11. Monitor individual’s performance on the job and counsel individuals when job performance is not satisfactory, work with individuals to improve job performance, gain necessary job skills and review career advancement activities
  12. Maintain, at the least, weekly physical contact with clients for counseling, mentoring and job coaching to insure job retention
  13. Track, monitor, case note and report client progress as required
  14. Assist with job development of programmatic outcomes to ensure that performance measures are consistently met
  15. Participate in Direct Service Team meetings
  16. Collect and maintain a library of up-to-date job search, career development, labor market and educational materials
  17. Prepare narrative and statistical reports, documents, required forms and correspondence regarding client status
  18. Timely and accurate data entry of client records
  19. Other duties as may be required

Qualifications:

  1. Completion of Bachelor Degree in Human Services, Career Counseling, Psychology, Education or related field or two (2) years’ experience in career counseling or related area
  2. Computer experience preferred in Word, Excel, Access, Windows and other software
  3. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  4. Ability to adapt to a variety of situations and individuals, ability to work independently and also work on team projects
  5. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all Agency business, employee and client matters
  6. Posses a working knowledge of the current economic conditions in the local community and regional area including current employment and labor practices, employment trends, socioeconomic problems, cultural differences, language and other barriers to employment
  7. Ability to problem solve and knowledge of motivational techniques to assist clients in analyzing their strengths and problems to work toward mutually agreed upon goals
  8. Knowledge of the factors which support individual and family self-sufficiency, especially as related to employment and training
  9. Knowledge of Federal, State and County employment and training programs, policies, rules and regulations
  10. Valid PA driver’s license, reliable transportation, vehicle insurance to comply with Agency standards of coverage, and willing to travel in all the counties we serve, and other counties as required
  11. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) fingerprint processed in accordance with Public Law 92522 and Child Protective Services Law (Title 23, PA C.S. Chapter 63), Federal Criminal History Background Check
  12. Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
  13. PA State Police Report of Criminal History Clearance.
